Last night it was reported that John Harbaugh and the Giants were finalizing an agreement for him to be hired as the next Head Coach for them. It was reported yesterday by multiple sources that the Titans brass was flying to meet with Harbaugh at his Baltimore home on Thursday to make one last push. That meeting will never take place as he cancelled the meeting and informed the Titans that he intends to sign with the Giants and become one of the highest paid coaches in the league as he was with Baltimore. The question now is, where do the Titans go from here? Who is going to clean up the mess in Nashville that the Tennessee Titans have made? Here are the top 5 coaching candidates to do so.
Mike McCarthy: Former Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys Head Coach
Mike McCarthy is going to be meeting with the Titans in person in Nashville on Saturday. Mike McCarthy is a good choice for the Tennessee Titans to be the next head coach because I keep going back to the pressure of his last head coaching experience and the success he had in Dallas under Jerry Jones trying to be the head coach of the head coach. McCarthy had a ton of success in Dallas and so did Dak Prescott. Cam Ward is a big factor in the next head coaching hire for the Titans. Brett Favre was successful with McCarthy and so was Aaron Rodgers. The Titans would benefit from his experience at the Head Coaching position. He has a proven track record and that track record includes developing quarterbacks. Cam Ward is the on track to be the face of this franchise and the future. Having stability at head coach with McCarthy and stability at the QB position is something the Titans have not had and desperately need. McCarthy would take a Titans team in rebuilding phase and he has dealt with that pressure before and navigating roster turnover. McCarthy would be a fantastic get for the Titans as head coach.
Mike McDaniel: Former Miami Dolphins Head Coach
Mike McDaniel was in the Titans building yesterday interviewing on Wednesday with the Titans. He is an exciting candidate because of his innovative offense and McDaniel is a different guy. He is always on social media because of how he says something funny or the way he says something, but there is no doubt he is an offensive guy and the thought of Cam Ward in his offense is exciting. He had to deal with a lot of ego’s in Miami. The thing that is intriguing about Mike McDaniel is his style of coaching, he takes some really complicated concepts whether it is an offensive play call or mechanics of what he wants his quarterback to do and dumbs it down to make it easy to translate. That is what the Titans need on offense. McDaniel would need to get a well respected defensive coordinator to go along with his offense he would be calling. It was reported that McDaniel would rather have a great OC job next season than a HC job for a team that he does not see having success fairly fast. I firmly believe McDaniel would great for the Titans because he is young, can build the culture he wants in Nashville and will be able to relate to the players and have a strong relationship with them.
Kevin Stefanski: Former Cleveland Browns Head Coach
Kevin Stefanski with the Browns was pretty incredible. Some people will look at overall records and go, “The Titans need someone better.” Stefanski has proven success as a head coach in not so easy circumstances. The man took the Browns to the playoffs with Joe Flacco at quarterback. That is not a knock at Flacco, but it certainly was not the Flacco who won the Super Bowl with the Ravens. Let alone the Browns were a dumpster fire when he took over. He got them back to being relevant and to a place they never thought they would be again, THE PLAYOFFS. That is almost where the Titans are at right now, but not to the extent the Browns were. He also is an offensive guy and quarterbacks have thrived in his system. He is heavy on play action and the run game, which has always been the Titans identity it feels like. Stefanski is calm, cool and collected. He could control this locker room and get this team back on track quick because he has been in this situation before coming into an organization that is struggling to get them back on track. Stefanski could be just what the Titans need.
Robert Saleh: Former New York Jets Head Coach and Current San Francisco 49er’s Defensive Coordinator
Culture. The Titans need culture and a foundation of how they play. Every time you watch the 49ers on defense, you see the energy, the buy in, and just how much those players give for Robert Saleh. Energy is not the only thing, because this is a league of results. His defense’s produce great results. He adapts to the environment. I could care less what he did with the Jets honestly. The guy is a winner and given the right tools and situation, he will be a really successful head coach and would give the Titans an identity to be feared. Saleh could be a perfect storm for the Titans.
Jesse Minter: Current Los Angeles Chargers Defensive Coordinator
Jesse Minter is one of these coordinators who I believe is ready to make the jump to head coach. Minter is a hot name for the Titans and have been on their radar pretty early into the coaching search for them. With his NFL/College background, he has done a good job developing young talent, but he is a defensive minded head coach so finding a offensive coordinator for Cam Ward is huge. I believe Minter and Ward would work well together as a HC/QB combo and collaborating on finding what each other want to see and do on offense when it comes to finding a coordinator. He has proven success as a DC as well with the Chargers finishing top-5 in total defense and scoring defense this past season. Also being a young coach, he can relate to the players and develop that player/coach relationship. The only concern is what is the offense going to look like, so the Titans have to confident he is going find an offensive coordinator who will bring success to Nashville.
These five candidates are my top 5 choices to be the next Head Coach of the Tennessee Titans with John Harbaugh off the board. Interviews are continuing throughout the week and weekend. I full expect by Sunday or really early next week for the Titans to have announced who they intend to hire. The dominoes are going to start falling with the first one being Harbaugh to New York. The Titans don’t need to wait around and get stuck with someone who was originally on the bottom of their list.
